"The SUPERPATH® hip replacement technique has become my surgical approach of choice In my experience, the tissue sparing nature of the SUPERPATH® surgical approach is unique among hip replacement procedures. In most circumstances there are no implant choice or postoperative patient bending restrictions. My brother (Dr. Paul Atkenson, a board certified orthopedic surgeon) and I both use this technique at our practice. Our patients may be on their feet within 3-4 hours following the operation and discharged from the hospital within 24 to 48 hours."

Dr. Robert Atkenson, M.D. is a board certified orthopedic surgeon from Orland Park, Il who together with his brother, Dr. Paul Atkenson, specializes in minimally invasive hip and knee replacement. He has extensive experience with the anterolateral, lateral, posterior and transtrochanteric surgical approaches to the hip. Dr. Robert Atkenson graduated with high honors from the University of Notre Dame in Engineering on an academic scholarship and with Tau Beta Pi honors distinction. Upon graduation he attended the University of Illinois Medical School where he received his medical doctorate. While in medical school at the University of Illinois he was selected as a James Scholar and participated in the James scholarship program. After performing an internship at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, he came back to the University of Illinois for general surgery and orthopedic residencies. He and his brother Dr. Paul Atkenson are among the first in Illinois to perform this procedure. "Unlike other less-invasive hip approaches, SUPERPATH® does not restrict me to only being able to use one type of hip replacement prosthesis. I can choose the best implant for the patient. The muscle-sparing plane of the approach minimizes blood loss and there is very little pain. My patients don't feel the need to stay longer than 23 hours in the hospital, and definitely need less rehab."

Dr. Chadha is a Board Certified Orthopedic surgeon. He completed his fellowship at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation and his residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan. "SUPERPATH® is a major part of my practice. I like that I help patients get better faster and maintain their function after surgery. This is due to the muscle and tendon sparing nature of SUPERPATH®. If, for any reason, patients need additional surgery in the future, more tissue is still available, and this reduces the difficulty of the procedure and increases the odds of a better outcome. Additionally, my patients are often on their feet within 3 to 4 hours of surgery. The doctors who refer them are amazed and so are the physical therapists. It's not uncommon for therapists to tell my patients they are performing at one week what other patients are doing at one month."

Dr. Chow has been heavily involved in the overall development of the SUPERPATH® procedure, which combines two tissue-sparing techniques, PATH® created by Dr. Brad Penenberg and SUPERCAP® created by Dr. Stephen Murphy. Both procedures have more than 7 years of clinical use in less invasive total hip arthroplasty.3,4 Dr. Chow has successfully performed more than 500 SUPERPATH® procedures, and is helping to train other physicians on this micro-posterior approach. He has published his experiences using this technique, and continues to present his findings internationally.

Dr. Chow has advanced training in both total joint replacement surgery and arthroscopic surgery. He has been formally trained at the New England Baptist Hospital, where he completed the prestigious Otto E. AuFranc Fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Chow also completed a fellowship in Arthroscopic Surgery from the Orthopaedic Center of Southern Illinois in Mt. Vernon, Illinois. Dr. Chow is a paid consultant for MicroPort. "There are 3 reasons why I do the SUPERPATH® approach. First, the improved hip stability means less chance of a postoperative hip dislocation. Preventing a postoperative hip dislocation starts with eliminating the intraoperative hip dislocation. Second, the in situ preparation of the femur allows me to use the implanted femoral component to measure the leg length and offset. I can thereby return the leg typically to whatever length the patient requests. Third, the intact femoral bone means the femur is stronger while I prepare the femoral canal to receive the femoral component which decreases the likelihood of an intraoperative femur fracture."

Dr. Kurtz is a board certified orthopedic surgeon in Nashville, TN who specializes in the primary and revision joint replacement surgery of the hip and knee joints. He is the Chief of Orthopedics at Baptist Hospital and a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, the American Society of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the Society for Arthritic Joint Surgery, Mid-America Orthopedic Association, and the Vanderbilt Orthopedic Society. He has three patents regarding hip replacements and continues to design techniques to improve patient outcomes.

Dr. Kurtz is a graduate of The University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas with Alpha Omega Alpha honors distinction. He then completed a residency in orthopedic surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, followed by a subspecialty fellowship in adult reconstructive joint surgery at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. In addition, he holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Rice University. Daniel Le, MD

Daniel Le, MD

"For me, SUPERPATH® represents an opportunity to spare the hip capsule, short rotators, and quadratus. My experience has been that, in the short term, sparing these leads to better intrinsic stability, faster rehab, and greatly minimized pain. In the long term, sparing these tissues will encourage a minimized dislocation risk and retained native tissue in anticipation of future surgery. Most importantly, I have found my SUPERPATH® patients to have a much better experience than with standard approaches."

Dr. Le is fellowship trained in hip and knee replacement surgery. He completed his medical training at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas and orthopedic residency training at UCLA. Dr. Le subsequently trained at the New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, where he completed the prestigious Otto E. Aufranc Fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery. He initially learned the SUPERCAP™ approach from its developer, Dr. Stephen Murphy in Boston, and later learned the SUPERPATH® modification from Dr. Jimmy Chow in Arizona. Dr. Le is the first to combine the SUPERPATH® approach with the HipSextant navigation system, which is a method for cup positioning that aims for optimal precision. Some of his clinical and research interests are surgical accuracy, primary and revision hip and knee replacement, hip dysplasia, periprosthetic fractures, and periprosthetic infection. Dr. Le is on the clinical and residency teaching faculty at Houston Methodist Hospital. The opinions of Dr. Le are his alone and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of MicroPort Orthopedics.

"I have been using the SUPERPATH® technique since April 2010. I can honestly say that it is the single greatest improvement in the care I deliver to my patients in my 20-year career. The speed at which the patients begin rehabilitation has been remarkable. It is nice to be able to release patients with no range-of-motion restrictions after they have such a significant surgery. I was initially convinced of the benefits of SUPERPATH® when I realized that I no longer needed to pick and choose which patients could benefit from a less invasive hip procedure. Every one of my hip replacement patients are SUPERPATH® candidates."

Dr. Dean Olsen was trained by Dr. Jimmy Chow of the Arizona Center for Bone and Joint Disorders. Dr. Olsen and Dr. Chow continue to collaborate to further improve the patient experience surrounding the SUPERPATH® hip replacement procedure.

Dr. Olsen is originally from Oregon where he did all of his initial orthopedic training. Dr. Olsen trained orthopedic residents in the US Navy from 1993 to 1996 and has lived in Minnesota since 1996. I believe that the SUPERPATH® technique will come to be known as one of the greatest innovations in total hip replacement surgery that we have seen. In addition, it is one of the easiest to learn, in my experience. This combination is a win-win for patients. My patients have been quite surprised at the speed of their rehab.

Dr. O'Meara is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon practicing in Georgetown, Texas for the past 20 years. In addition to total joint replacement surgery, he enjoys sports medicine and is one of the team physicians for Southwestern University. "The advantages that SuperPATH® affords patients over traditional hip replacements are amazing, in my opinion. For surgeons, it truly merges time-honored techniques and principles with new instrumentation, without sacrificing visualization or results. In the event that a difficulty should arise, you can simply extend the incision and approach. My patients are leaving the hospital sooner, with minimal pain, and with more independence."

Juan A Serrato, MD specializes in sports medicine and general orthopedics. He is a native Houstonian and has returned there to build his orthopedic practice. Dr Serrato attended the University of St. Thomas in Houston, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in Biology and minors in both Chemistry and Theology. He attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston on the research track, which included two Howard Huges Medical Institute Fellowships. He then did his orthopedic surgery residency at Tulane in New Orleans, and completed a fellowship at the renowned Cincinnati Sports Medicine Center and Noyes Knee Institute.
